An exceptional collection of 14 official items relating to the historic opening of the Sydney–Melbourne Standard Gauge Railway in April 1962, one of the most significant milestones in Australia's railway history.

Assembled by H. Kingsmill, NSW Railways Superintendent, the collection includes official souvenirs, invitation cards, dinner menus, a souvenir ticket, railway travel documents and other commemorative ephemera issued for the opening celebrations. Many pieces are personalised or associated with Kingsmill, providing an outstanding provenance and direct connection to the event.

The completion of the standard gauge link between Sydney and Melbourne marked the end of the long-standing break-of-gauge between Australia's two largest cities, representing a major achievement in the nation's transport infrastructure.
